I’m house-sitting / cat-sitting for my cousin this week and while it’s fun having the place to yourself, it’s also quite stressful. Rex (pictured above) is the only real stress factor.

The first time I looked after him he fell out the window from a two-story apartment. The next time I looked after him I nearly cooked him when I left the central heating on all day. Wasn’t my fault, the heater had a stupid off button that didn’t always work. Anyway, there are plenty more stories but I won’t bore you.

The thing that’s most fascinating about Rex is his personality. If you’ve met Rex you’ll know that he’s not the friendliest cat in the world and is often seen as a snob. If you get too close he’ll run away from you or duck so you can’t pat him. BUT when you get him on your own (with no other people or pets around) he’s actually quite affectionate. He’ll sit there purring while I pat him but as soon as Rocky (the other cat) walks into the room, Rex bolts and acts all like “yeah, whatever”. Cats are so strange.

I don’t know how she manages to do it, I’ve stuffed so much crap under my bed, there’s hardly any space and she’s a lot more plum nowadays (No she’s not fat! It’s just her winter coat).

She usually goes under the bed when there’s a thunderstorm or when I’m trying to get her to do some exercise by chasing her around the house. It’s actually quite funny watching her run from one room to the next, sometimes her paws lose grip when she’s trying to turn corners on the tiles and she goes sliding across the floor. She’s quite a smart little girl, if she doesn’t want to play she knows the only place I can’t chase her is when she’s under the bed.

Here she is after about 5 minute of running around the house. She doesn’t look too impressed that I found her.

It’s not just us humans who are feeling the cold. My little tropical fish were starting to look a bit small, I think they’ve either contracted in size with the cold weather or they’ve been shivering so much that they’ve lost weight. Either way I’ve turned up their heater to keep them nice and toasty, but not too toasty. When my mum first got guppies she set the heater a bit too high and lets just say her aquarium phase didn’t last very long.

Along with the fish my little pup (well she’s not really a pup anymore, she’s 11 years old now) Sammi was feeling the cold too. When I came home the yesterday she was on the fleece blanket all curled up in a little ball, the poor little baby was so cold.

Here she is in this years winter jacket. I love that it has a hood with faux fur trimming, kind of makes her look like an Eskimo. Next time I take her out, I’ll have to make sure we’re not wearing matching jackets.

My mates recently moved to a tiny studio apartment that’s just minutes away from Annandale Hotel and the life-saving 24 hr Stanmore Maccas (If you live in Sydney’s Western suburbs you know how awesome that Maccas is after a big night out).We went over last night for their house warming and met the cutest little guinea pig named appropriately – Guinea. Guinea was the hot topic of the night, where most of our evening’s conversation was based on the little fellow, not the new place. I guess it was more of a “Meet Guinea” night than a house warming, whatever you call it, it was a great night.

Guinea is quite fascinating. Not only is he small, fluffy and likes to hide, he makes these little “squeaking” noises – like those “squeaking” soft toys you give dogs and babies. We occasionally tried to squeeze him to see if he was a squeaky toy.

Whilst at my friends place we started to was the version of Wolverine that was leaked on to the internet. It was really funny actually because some scenes hadn’t been digitally retouched so you could see the harness and strings attached to the actors as the fly like mutants. Other scenes didn’t have the correct filters or special effects applied which was pretty neat because you got to see things like the aircraft in its raw modelling state. About 30 minutes into the movie we all decided to bail, most of us were pretty tired. And watching Wolverine like that was kind of wrecking it. Though I think it would be neat to watch this version after watching it properly in full wide-screen screen surround sound awesomeness at the cinemas.
