Sugar hit for the wiser

Gummi bears
Instead of spending money on a Sugar Hit that would last about 30 minutes, whereby after the eating I would probably regret being a gluttonous pig, I decided to spend my money on a sugar hit that would probably last me about a year (maybe two).

Even though I don’t have a sweet tooth, I’m a sucker for gummi bears. Who doesn’t love gummi bears? It takes you back to the days when life was a giant playground and you didn’t have a trouble in the world – except the trouble you’d get into for finishing the entire packet of gummi bears without sharing. Oops.

Also picked up a box of TNT Sour Cola Straps.

Sour cola straps
The combined weight of the 2 boxes of sugar: 2.5kgs.

Looks like I’ve got a lot of eating to do. If you come over in the next 6-12 months, please feel free to give me a hand and we can sit there buzzing and bouncing with sugar. Good times.

10 shades of grey

Grey pantone

Don’t worry this isn’t going to be a philosophical blog post about life, it’s actually quite the opposite. A very superficial blog post about my wardrobe. That’s right, my wardrobe. It’s all grey!

I’ve got 7 grey jumpers/hoodies, each in a different shade of grey; multiple grey tops/tees/singlets and 2 pairs of grey jeans. This makes the morning dressing ritual very difficult at times, especially this morning when, in one of my grey jeans, I opened my wardrobe to find only an array of grey hoodies to grab.

Think I’m in need for some colourful retail therapy this weekend.

Breakfast on the Bridge

Breakfast on the bridge

5am starts are not my thing. I was half hoping it would rain so we wouldn’t go and I could keep sleeping, but I sure I’m glad we went. It was an experience well worth the early start. I didn’t realise how lucky we were to get tickets, apparently over 190,000 people applied but there were only 6,000 spots on the bridge.

It was a mad rush to get to Milsons Point, our ticket said we had to get there by 6.30 otherwise we’d risk not being let on the bridge. We got there with minutes to spare only to join a kilometer long line for the 2 kilometer long walk to the picnic spot. The walk was pretty surreal, firstly from being in a daze so early in the morning, and secondly from the strange and weird attractions on the way. My favourite attraction was the free coffee. We automatically gravitated towards the coffee aroma for the much needed caffeine hit. None of us are morning people so it was funny that we all agreed to go.

In my morning daze, I didn’t realise each setup was one of the sponsors. First up was the Abbott’s Village Bakery display complete with a live jazz band on the back of a old ute.

Next was Cuttaway Creek with their raspberry jam banners, I don’t know how I didn’t see the raspberries on the banners. I think I was too distracted by the live band.

The coolest display was the live cattle. When Charles told us there was going to be cows on the bridge I thought he was just trying to trick us in our morning daze. He wasn’t joking, they were there, and they were real. If you didn’t believe your eyes, your nose sure would have convinced you, as soon as we walked past the truck that they were carried on, you knew it was real.

The first few moments on the grass were almost like a dream. It really was an amazing sight to see, you almost felt like royalty where the grass felt like the red carpet. Should have waved queen-like to the volunteers.

Once we settled in our spot, the flow of freebies began. And who doesn’t love free stuff? They weren’t skimp either, apparently Yalla yoghurt is quite expensive.

We were also given these green and gold hats which we were then asked to wear (for the money shot). I hope my hat wearing abilities help tourism Australia.

It really was an amazing experience. If you didn’t get a chance to go this year, I’d highly recommend trying next year. And a word of advice, try to pack up a bit early to escape the sea of people exiting the bridge.

I’m slowly uploading more photos from Breakfast on the Bridge to my flickr page. I don’t often update my flickr page, but I thought this was a well deserved event.

I heart my bike

I love my bike

With the turn of daylight saving and the weather starting to heat up, I thought it would be a good idea to dig out my bike again. It’s been sitting in the garage collecting dust and cob-webs for the past 4 months so it probably needs a service … or two.

I love my bike. It’s not the flashiest bike of all, just a basic mountain bike but I love riding it. I remember when I first got my bike, I took it out and time really did seem to fly. Before I knew it I’d been riding around for 3 hours and nearly got myself lost in the maze that is Olympic Park and it’s surrounding suburbs. Good times.

Can’t wait to ‘get lost’ again this Summer, though I’ll need a new riding companion seeing that my bike companion is half way around the world. Come back Lisa!

Liz I know you have Lisa’s bike so expect a call soon!

Homeward bound

Rex

After 10 days of house-sitting / cat-sitting I sure am glad to be heading home tonight. I miss my cat-hair-free house, my desk, my little doggie and of course my bed.

Rex (pictured above) definitely misses his mum. The poor baby. Every day when I walked in the door he’d look so disappointed, hoping it would be his mum but then seeing me. Don’t worry Rex, your mum is home tonight. Hooray!

Start of the season

BBQ

As the footy season ends so begins the next season, BBQ season. Every year Anna’s BBQ marks the start of the BBQ season for us. The sun was out, the food was sizzling and the crazy wind we’d been experiencing all week in Sydney was kindly absent – perfect BBQ weather. Even Princess (pictured below) had a great time chilling out in the sun, though you can tell she’s really just sitting there eyeing the sausage.

Princess

The person who had the most fun in the sun was probably Kobie. He kept dragging us lazy oldies to play skipping or handball or, in my case, climb trees with him.

Climbing trees

Though I must say, it didn’t take much to convince me to climb trees with him. I’m just a big kid on the inside and probably had more fun climbing and swinging than he did.

Saved?

Cheesecake

I promised Anna I’d bake some mini-cheesecakes for her birthday and having never made cheesecake before, I spend all week looking up recipes. I found 3 recipes that I really liked so I had the brilliant idea of combining the 3 to make mini white-chocolate cheesecakes with an oreo-base and blueberry syrup on top. Could I have made it any harder for myself? Seriously, what was I thinking.

Anyway, we totally stuffed it up! We got all the quantities mixed up and ending up with too much butter in the base, too much sugar in the top and too much heat in the oven. We couldn’t have gotten it any more wrong than we did. It’s not easy baking after a few drinks, I obviously didn’t learn from our previous BUI experience (baking under the influence).

After burning the lot we tried to save them by chopping the top off (because it was pitch black), but it ended up looking a bit like an egg-tart. So to make it look edible G, being the Masterchef that she is, had a bit of a play. In the end it turned out semi-decent looking (btw: the blackness in the after shot is Oreos, but burnt) and it was actually really yummy.

Next week’s mission: Wagon-wheels (preferably not BUI).

Too cool for school

Rex

I’m house-sitting / cat-sitting for my cousin this week and while it’s fun having the place to yourself, it’s also quite stressful. Rex (pictured above) is the only real stress factor.

The first time I looked after him he fell out the window from a two-story apartment. The next time I looked after him I nearly cooked him when I left the central heating on all day. Wasn’t my fault, the heater had a stupid off button that didn’t always work. Anyway, there are plenty more stories but I won’t bore you.

The thing that’s most fascinating about Rex is his personality. If you’ve met Rex you’ll know that he’s not the friendliest cat in the world and is often seen as a snob. If you get too close he’ll run away from you or duck so you can’t pat him. BUT when you get him on your own (with no other people or pets around) he’s actually quite affectionate. He’ll sit there purring while I pat him but as soon as Rocky (the other cat) walks into the room, Rex bolts and acts all like “yeah, whatever”. Cats are so strange.

Sticky glasses

Broken glasses

I don’t have the best of luck with glasses. I broke my reading glasses about a month after I got them and I dropped my sunglasses the first weekend I had them. Okay, when I broke my reading glasses it was my fault. I was playing with the arm, trying to bend it a little and then all of a sudden – SNAP! A little piece of the arm went flying and I sat there for a good couple of minutes thinking about what a dumb ass I was.

I haven’t gotten around to replacing my glasses yet because A) My parents will kill me and B) Health care doesn’t roll over till next year. So in the meantime sticky tapes been my best friend.

Hey there good looking!

Sydney Sunsets

Came home to a spectacular sunset yesterday and had the sudden urge to eat fairy floss (which is actually pretty hard to find nowadays).

Sunset

The only problem with this sunset is that it was a Monday evening – start of the work week. Fingers crossed that it repeats on Friday evening so it can be fully enjoying with good mates and a beer in hand.
